 Bartle's Taxonomy Cloud Gaming

I thought it would be a good idea to make a post applying Bartle’s Taxonomy to Cloud Gaming Dark RP so that when implementing updates and creating events we could keep in mind various player types and what they want from a game. Bartle’s Taxonomy describes 4 player types and what makes them enjoy a video game, although these categories aren’t rigid as players can switch or combine these types, the simplicity is necessary for analysis. These player types are the Achiever, the Explorer, the Socializer, and the Killer. (obviously this is just my own opinion and others may have different interpretations how to apply these to Cloud Gaming).

Achievers

Achievers are all about points and status. They want to be able to show their friends how they are progressing. They like to collect badges and put them on display. In Cloud Gaming Achievers want to earn all the skill points, complete challenges, earn the gang highest level, have the most money, have as much status as possible etc.

The best way to update Cloud Gaming to appeal to these players are:

1. To increase the number of rare challenges, items, achievements, money etc so that they have a lot to do in game.

2. Allow them to show off these achievements. Create leader boards and allow players to public display their achievements so everyone can know what they have accomplished.

The negative version of this are achievers who use exploits to speed ahead of others in achieving skills, money etc. Punishments need to be enforced to punish those who do this (achievements, money etc stripped) to keep things fair as well as incentives put in place to follow the rules and have fun.

Explorers

Explorers want to see new things and discover new secrets. They’re not as bothered about points or prizes. For them, discovery is the prize. Explorers are fine with repetitive tasks as long as they eventually “unlock” a new area of the game, or they deliver some kind of reward or Easter Egg. Creating secret or highly skilled exclusive areas, adding hidden items or other secrets that only Explorers would notice. Explorers really enjoy the surprise that’s possible in a game. In Cloud Gaming Explorers are those who jump at the chance to play a new event type, explore a new mechanic and do something in the game that hasn’t previously been done.

The best way to update Cloud Gaming to appeal to these players are:

1. To add hidden areas, items, animations, events and other activities for them to do and then brag about.

2. Update the game in small ways regularly so they don’t lose interest.

The negative version of this are also exploiters, but these players aren’t exploiting to gain in-game achievements but to break the system itself just to see what happens (wall glitches etc). While this is bad if uncontrolled, they can be useful as QAs for testing flaws within a system or mechanic as they will try every method to break it, thus allowing developers to patch the issues they find.

Socializers

The vast majority of players are Socializers, almost 80% of players. Socializers experience fun in their games through their interaction with other players. Socializers are happy to collaborate in order to achieve bigger and better things than they could on their own. The point with Socializers is that joining forces makes sense to them.

The best way to update Cloud Gaming to appeal to these players are:

1. Encourage activities where players work together cooperatively and hang out while also earning money. Gangs do this in part however raids complicate the matter with Raids interrupting cooperative play.

2. Reduce violent interactions with killers. A way for socialisers to opt out of interacting with killers in raids at a cost (an extortion mechanic where players trade money for not being raided, similar to individual mugging) makes sense as a way for both killers and achievers to interact and profit.

The negative version of socializers are trolls and griefers who ruin the mood of the server with ear rape, slurs etc.

Killers

Killers are similar to Achievers in the way that they get a thrill from gaining points and winning status too. What sets them apart from Achievers is that the Killers want to see other people lose. They’re highly competitive, and winning is what motivates them. They want to be the best at the game—and it should come as little surprise that the only way for that to be true is if they beat everyone else. Raiders, Dedicated Turf War / CPs / muggers etc would count as killers.

The best way to update Cloud Gaming to appeal to these players are:

1. Allow them many opportunities to verse other killers and to see their rank on a leader board so they can tally how well they do and who is their rival.

2. Separate them from other types of players as much as possible. Create lots of distractions for killers to entertain themselves in (fight clubs, duels etc) so they don’t resort to killing other types of players that don’t want to battle.

The negative version of killers are RDMers, RDAers etc who bored by having no one to fight resort to battling random players, who most likely aren’t fighting back. Perhaps a permanent PvP arena where anyone who enters is automatically up for a fight could limit the blood lust of these kind of players.
