amfetamiin reacted to nani in How to not make your screenshots look like shit using your camera swep.
In this guide I'll be showing you how to set up a few lines of shit in your autoexec that will turn your camera swep into a screenshot machine. Also retains the "functionality" of being able to spam your camera click at people.
These lines of code (if you can call it code) will:
    - Make your camera make a click sound and do nothing by default.
    - Make it take extremely high res screenshots when F11 is pressed.
    - When F11 is pressed, you will auto-whisper in chat what mode your camera is set to.
    - Works in all gamemodes, not just DarkRP as its all built in Gmod stuff. (As long as you have the regular gmod_camera)
You can watch a video guide here.

    Text guide:
Right-click Gmod on Steam. Click properties > Local Files > Browse.
Open the "garrysmod" folder and then the "cfg" folder. Open "autoexec.cfg" or create it if it doesn't already exist.
Paste the following into your autoexec:

alias jpeg bind f11 jpegToggle1 alias jpegToggle1 "bind f11 jpegToggle2;alias jpeg "poster 8";say /w Set to poster mode." alias jpegToggle2 "bind f11 jpegToggle1;alias jpeg " ";say /w Set to blank mode." CTRL + S to save, and then go ahead and close notepad (or whatever text editor you're using).
Then, right click Gmod again, and paste " exec autoexec.cfg " into your LAUNCH OPTIONS.
If Gmod is already open, open your console and type " exec autoexec " and press enter to manually run your autoexec.
Now, pull out your camera and spam click to your heart's content. Yipee!
When you press F11 however, your character will auto-whisper in chat "Set to poster mode." This means your camera is ready to take some super duper pooper scooper screenies.
Left click and wait a moment, your game will bug out and freeze for a second. This is because it is taking a screenshot at 8x your game resolution, and then stitching it together into one big ultra high res image. You can change the multiplier in the code above. E.g "poster 8" will take screenshots at 8x your res. "poster 10" will take a screenshot at 10x your screen resolution. Thats a 19200x10800p screenshot if your monitor is 1080p!
All of these screenshots are stored in garrysmod > screenshots. (Game local files on Steam).
Keep in mind that when taking a poster screenshot, your nameplate and screenshot won't be visible, however chat will still be on screen and will be multiplied too so make sure your screen doesn't have any chat messages on screen before you take a screenshot.

    bye
(Alternatively skip all of this and just hold the camera out and type "poster {x}" in your console. But who cares, automation is fun. ...Right?)

Preface: This guide may look long, but fear not, it is mainly images and detailed descriptions of steps for less advanced users
AFKing on the server offers multiple benefits: helping our beloved community, earning us tokens, and allowing us to join Job Credit Raffles.
With this guide you'll be able to reduce GMod to a simple text box, which will allow you to leave it running on your machine without impact on performance or without your fans keeping you up at night.

(yes this is really what it looks like)
Before starting this guide you may want to consider how you would like to apply this. You can run this on your main machine, it shouldn't impact your FPS in other games or make the fans act up at night, or you can run it on some crappy laptop you have laying around. Extra instructions for laptop users (whether as a main machine like me or as a dedicated AFKing machine) are at the end.

    Step 1 - Locating hl2.exe
If you already know how to find Garry's Mod files on your PC skip this step.
Go to your steam library, right click on Garry's Mod, and click Properties.
Under "Local Files" you will see "Browse...", clicking that should open a File Explorer window in the GMod folder.

You should be able to see a file called hl2.exe in this folder.

This is the actual Garry's Mod app, you can launch GMod by double clicking on that file.

    Step 2 - Creating & Testing a Shortcut
    Windows not-11
Right-clicking on hl2.exe should prompt you to "Create shortcut"
    Windows 11
Right-clicking on hl2.exe then on "More Options" should open a menu where you can find "Create shortcut"

To check if you've done everything right so far, you can try running(double-clicking) the shortcut, which should look like this:

GMod should open up like usual, this means everything is going well so far.

Step 3 - Editing the Shortcut
If you right click on the shortcut, then click properties, a small window should pop up with multiple different tabs.

Clicking on "Shortcut" you should be able to see the "Target" box with the path to your gmod file. We are now going to add modifiers after this path.
Copy and past the following modifiers after the path you see:
-64bit -textmode -single_core -nojoy -low -nosound -nod3d9ex -sw -noshader -noshaderapi -nopix -novid -nopreload -nopreloadmodels +connect s1.cloud-gaming.co.uk
It should look something like this:

Notice the space between .exe and -64bit, make sure it's there.
These modifiers make it so the game will load in text-mode and using as few PC resources as possible, and will make this client load into CG automatically leaving your PC free to do other things.

    Step 4 - AFK
Click on the shortcut you made, a lot of text will scroll past as GMod loads your addons and connects to CG, but soon enough you should only be seeing a few console messages every now and then. You are successfully connected to Cloud Gaming and AFKing on the server.

It may use around 1gb of RAM but other than that should have minimal impact on CPU, and should not be using your GPU.
If your wifi fails or you get disconnected or any other problems arise just close the app in the top right with X and open the shortcut again.

    Extra Step - Desktop Shortcut
Instead of going to your GMod folder every time, you can move it to your desktop and have it as a button there:

And/Or have it as a button on your taskbar:

To have it on your desktop, simple right click on the shortcut you made, and click the scissors (Windows-11) or Cut (Windows-not11), then go to your desktop, right click your background and click on the clipboard (Windows-11) or paste (Windows-not11).
To rename it, right-click the shortcut and click on the box with a text cursor (Windows-11) or rename (Windows-not11), you can then name it "GMod AFK" or whatever else you like.
To have it on your taskbar, right click the shortcut, (in your gmod folder or on your desktop) and click on More Options then Pin to Taskbar (Windows-11) or Pin to Taskbar (Windows-not11)

Extra Step - For Laptop Users
While Desktop users can just unplug/turn off their monitors, we need to find a way to close our laptops without disconnecting us from the server.
Open "Control Panel" (can be found by using the windows search bar), and search "power". You should see the following:

Click on "Change what closing the lid does" and change it to the following:

This allows you to close your laptop without disconnecting you from AFKing. Before leaving the laptop for long periods of time close whichever apps you don't need running (eg discord or chrome) and just shut the lid of the laptop. This will turn off the screen but leave you connected to CG. When you reopen the lid you should be right back where you left off.

If you have any questions, concerns, or issues, leave them in the comments below so I or someone else can answer.

    U also need an VTFEdit
    https://valvedev.info/tools/vtfedit/
now you need a program like Photoshop or GIMP.

    Let's get started

First u need to open Steam and go to Garrys Mod in you Library, right click on Garrys Mod

then go to properties, local files and brows local files

    now open garrysmod -> addons
after that go back to the properties from GMOD and click brows files a second time, in the second tab open the bin folder

now search for the m9k GMA files in the addon folder

if you have located them just drag them onto the gmad.exe in the bin folder

now you can close the tab with the bin folder and scroll up in the addons folder until u see those files:

copie those folders into another folder onto your desktop

then navigate to the files from the gun you would like to edit, i will make a new skin for the MP40
    m9k_small_arms_pack_128093075\materials\models\weapons\v_models\GUNNAME

open the file which you want to edit (i have to open mp40_d.vtf        Note: NEVER EVER edit files that have norm or normal in there name or are Valve Material File)

now export is as a PNG and open it with the photo editing program you would like to use
if you have opened the PNG edit the gun skin however you like
when you finished editing safe it as a PNG with the same file name as the file you wanna edit, i have to name it mp40_d
get back into VTFEdit and import you PNG

    and copy those setting:

    and press ok
after that make sure that on the left side under "Flags" only those things are marked:

    now press safe

name the file like the PNG
now open the weapon file in you addons folder
    D:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\GarrysMod\garrysmod\addons\WEAPONPACK\materials\models\weapons\v_models\GUNNAME
and drag the new vtf in the folder and press replace
after that you can close all files and start gmod

    Enjoy the custom skin

Basing: The Basics and Not So Basic
    By: SCxBeeKId

I'm making this guide because I love building and I often see people making mistakes or people who want to build and have great ideas but just don't know quite where to start. Today I'll be showing my thoughts and my sort of process when building a base and just giving pointers for all prop limits.
    Essential Props and Materials
When making a base and looking at other bases you'll often start to see a pattern with the props that people use. These are gonna be the props you'll use most often and that I personally recommend.
    Models/props_wasteland/interior_fence002b.mdl (Used for fading doors)
Models/props_wasteland/interior_fence001c.mdl (Used for walls of entrance hallway)
    Models/props_phx/construct/metal_plate2x4.mdl (Explosive Proof)
    Models/props_phx/construct/metal_plate4x4.mdl (Explosive Proof)
    models/props_building_details/Storefront_Template001a_Bars.mdl (Most common one way)
models/props_c17/FurnitureTable002a.mdl (Used to check for 2x2 on fences)
    Materials
There are materials a lot of people use that just look really clean. I recommend using these.
models/debug/debugwhite (Used on most props. Best used with a color)
models/gibs/metalgibs/metal_gibs (Used commonly on props that aren't used for shooting windows) [users choice]
models/wireframe (Used on fence props combined with color of choice)
    The Precision Tool
I often find that not alot of people really understand the precision tool and how to use it. Specifically today I want to explain the difference between having the Push/Pull as Percent (%) of Target's Depth box checked off and not having it checked. When you take the single small cube prop for example. One of those cubes is a PHX. It's what I use as a form of measurement when building. Say you check the box off and set it to 100. If you push/pull it will move relative to that of it's own model and size. So if you move it with the box checked off and at 100% it will move as if you stackered it. An exact PHX in whichever direction you push/pull it in. If you did the same thing but did it at 50% then it would move only half the distance of it's size. So you would say it moved 0.5 PHX. When the box isn't checked I'm unsure what it moves the props in relevance too. But it moves it farther at smaller and bigger measurements. When you have the box checked that should be used for precision movements.
    Color Tool
The Color Tool is very simple. However I want to point out the transparency slider as some don't realize it's really there or what it even does.

When looking at this image direct your eyes to where you see the slider where the color fades and you start seeing the checker pattern. That is the transparency slider. The lower you slide it the more you will be able to see through the prop and the more the color fades. As well, the bottom number value that you see on the screenshot is the value for the transparency. You can type in there to adjust it with better precision.

With that all being said and understood, lets move on to my thoughts and tips for the different prop limits.

    Prop Limit 40-45
Users who first join the server or just got the 40 tokens for their first prop pack will understand that it's tough at this stage. But it doesn't mean you can't make usable and defendable bases. When having such a low prop limit you should be building in much smaller areas. There are great areas for 40-45 prop bases all around fountain specifically which is where I will be putting my focus today. I have a 45 prop base for right outside spawn that works well and is good for people to be able to learn from. It's an early and pretty scuffed build of mine but you will be able to get a good understanding of the mechanics of basing from this.
    https://imgur.com/a/y87lgs0
(Tried limiting screenshots cuz attachment space sucks!)
This is a pretty simple base that you can learn a bit from that I will drop the download to.

    50 / 55 / 60 Prop Limit
This limit is where people start to feel a lot more comfortable and you can do a lot with this size. You definitely get to be a bit more creative and original with your builds as a result. With 50 / 55 / 60 props you should be building in a bit bigger areas. Places like industrial and sewers. Now I have a base in sewers that I'm going to show you.
    https://imgur.com/a/wicjuIX
This base is actually I believe 45 props because I have not taken the time to update it. But this is a good example on what a 50 at least prop SHOULD look like. A lot more defenses compared to the previous 45 one. With more props this base will look a lot better.

    sewers_garage_scx_v1.txt
    ---------------------------------------
    75 Prop Limit
You did it, you finally got to 75 props. 75 is where you finally have complete freedom and liberty to do whatever the fuck you'd like to do. You can be insanely creative with this and you can make some kickass dupes. Sadly I've only made a few but I made one where a previous one was shown that I like which I will be posting to show you kinda what I'm talking about with the creativity.

I’ve only come back to CG for like I believe 2 months now. It’s been an absolute blast playing again because I’ve had the opportunity to meet new folks and reconnect with old ones too.

Kivines - You know people stereotype Canadians being overly nice which is definitely true with Kivines. He’s a really friendly guy and is an absolute great guy to talk to and be around. Love you brother
LoquaciousRy - Ryan is a fucking G. He comes off prickish to some but if you get to know the lad he’s a great guy. Very down to earth and respectful guy that is a blast to be around. He’s a very funny guy too so if you see him in game give him a shout.
Jomano - This guy is a complete bozo I hate this guy. But he’s pretty cool sometimes! Genuinely though he’s a very funny guy who is a great man to sit and hang around in a base and chill with. (He’s also pretty decent at US geography)
Amfetamiin - Easily one of the best admins I’ve ever seen and most definitely a great guy to talk to in a base. Base with him from time to time and he’s great. (Use a different dupe that’s literally anything but Paul’s shack for once oh my god)
David - He’s resigned from staff recently and kinda taken a step back but David is an awesome guy. Genuinely a really funny guy who’s a little bit of a knobhead. Much love David
David Quental - David Quental is the Top G of CG and cannot be beat by any other player. Not even following the meme, I fucking love David. He’s actually a really funny guy when you chat to him. God Bless David Quental
William - He’s an absolute nerd and a new fella (your playtime in 2018 doesn’t count in my eyes) but he’s a great base mate and is a good conversation
Faith - Fuck this guy (ily bro)
Lewis Joseph - Actually the nicest fucker. (He calls me a slut and he’s a little bitch) He also loves the same band I do so he’s awesome!!
Greeny - I actually don’t talk to greeny much or know him personally but he’s a great guy and a great help when I need something when I’m staffing. Bless you mate 🙏
Camille - He’s actually a lad I knew from before my long break. He still invited me to TBE and we chilled hella. Got nothing but love and respect for you mate.

Springate - Absolute bozo casino manager main (is actually really nice. If you see him in game give him a shout)

    Hello,
I just wanted to say a huge thank you to all the staff who help the server and keep everything fun for all. I do appreciate all the work, time, energy and effort that staff put in and the patience they have when dealing with reports. I, myself face a lot of stuff that I am not comfortable with and the lovely staff team have always made sure to handle it very carefully and some always make sure to talk to me to update me on anything that happens plus to see how I am doing.
I would tag the whole staff team but I would also feel bad in doing so, but honestly thank you from the bottom of my heart for doing all that you do.
I hope you all have a lovely day, and I can not wait to see you all on the server.

    Keep up the good work!
